How Blind Spot Monitoring Calibration Works
Blind spot monitoring calibration checks and aligns the sensors that detect vehicles beside or behind your car. These systems commonly use radar sensors positioned behind the rear bumper or near the rear quarter panels. When another vehicle enters the monitored area, the system may illuminate an indicator in the side mirror or provide an audible warning if you activate the turn signal.
Correct calibration helps the sensors monitor the intended detection zones. A sensor that has shifted or developed a fault may provide late warnings, unnecessary alerts, or no warning when another vehicle is present. Blind spot monitoring remains a driver-assistance feature, so drivers must still check their mirrors and surroundings before changing lanes.

Blind Spot Calibration After Windshield Replacement
Blind spot calibration is not automatically required after every windshield replacement. Blind spot radar sensors are commonly located toward the rear of the vehicle, so replacing the windshield usually does not disturb them. Calibration may still be necessary if the vehicle manufacturer identifies another affected component or if a separate repair event altered the blind spot system.
A vehicle can have both rear blind spot sensors and a forward-facing camera mounted near the windshield. When that windshield is replaced, the forward camera may require ADAS calibration even though the rear blind spot sensors do not. Identifying each sensor and the features it supports prevents unrelated systems from being grouped into one unnecessary calibration procedure.
What to Expect During Blind Spot Calibration
Blind spot calibration begins by identifying the vehicle and reviewing the manufacturer’s requirements. A technician may scan the vehicle for diagnostic trouble codes, inspect the sensors and mounting areas, and check whether the bumper or nearby components have been disturbed. Damage to a sensor bracket or mounting point may need to be corrected before calibration can succeed.
The next steps depend on the vehicle. Calibration may involve programming the sensor, placing the vehicle in a controlled position relative to a target, completing an aiming procedure, or driving under specified conditions. A final scan or system check confirms whether the procedure was completed successfully.
